Its that time of year again. The weather is getting nice, the trees are turning green, the flowers are blooming, and its time to send in your 990’s to the IRS. The deadline for 990’s to be received by the IRS is May 15th. We have been getting copies of several of your 990’s as of recent, and we have noticed that there are a few reoccurring issues popping up. It is very important to have your preparer make sure that these very important items are included on your return. 1. The group exemption number 2. The correct box is marked and the proper number inserted on the tax-exempt status 3. Be sure that an amount is entered for your membership dues and assessments. New for this year: It is mandatory that the secretary of state is done through headquarters. We have a mandatory meeting set for May 23, 2011. All clubs must have at least one director designated to set on the headquarters board, it is a mandatory for this director to attend the meeting.. There will be further information sent out by e-mail as well as through the postal service and your club will receive a phone call from headquarters to answer any questions and address any concerns about attending this meeting. We are all apart of a great organization who share a common bond of patriotism its time to start making a strong effort to act in unity for a greater good. We are getting started on a program that will lend out donated medical equipment to those who cannot afford it such as wheel chairs, crutches, walkers, ect…. We will need all chapters to help with donations of equipment, cash, or time to get this off the ground. Please let us know if you have anything that you can donate for this program In the past we have mentioned the starting of a board game similar to monopoly for our organization with each chapter as a “property” or space on the board. This is one of many ideas we have for programs we want to get up and running in the near future. As always we appreciate your cooperation with sending in all of your paperwork and dues including, minutes of the meeting, activity reports, officer and director information in a timely manner. We look forward to seeing your clubs representative at the May meeting!!!!!

If you have already filed your Secretary of State Send a copy of it to Headquarters to stay in compliance. We just would like to make sure that all Modern Day Veteran Chapters says in compliance with the Secretary of State because if they are not filed on time it takes a lot of paperwork and is time consuming to get a chapter reinstated with the state. Also, next year we will Doing a Biennial Secretary of State for the club and the cost for that is $30.00 which means that your secretary of state will be done for TWO years instead of one and that will be included with your Clubs renewal for next year. Also, we would like for all of our chapters if you know ahead of time on the activities that you will be holding at your club if you would let us know here at Headquarters so we can put you on the Web page so your chapters could get more recognition in the Calendar of events. We would like to know what you have from day to day also like dart tournaments , pool leagues so we can put them in on the club activities . We are trying to get the Web page up and running and make our chapters look like you should and to give the clubs the recognition that you all deserve. We are trying to make it to where all of the chapters can go to the web page and get all the information that your club will need thru out the year such as Minutes of Meetings, Membership Applications, Sales to Members and Non Members, Benefit and Donation forms , and Activity Sheets. You will be able to pull it off and print from your computer what you need when needed. To Get information off the web page you go to moderndayveteranshq.com, If you scroll down to where the flags are at, under History of Modern day Veterans it say new that is where you will get to the new membership applications that headquarters is now using. To get to all other forms that you will need you will see where it says Changes to the Constitution then in green letters it says start . That is where all your forms such as the minutes of meeting, Sales to members and non member, etc will be. As I stated in the first of this letter Club Activities will be for your chapters day to day activities Such as Karaoke, tournaments, Leagues, ladies nite, etc. Calendar of events is where we will be posting your clubs Fish Fry’s, BBQ’s , Any thing that your club is doing that is Special not your day to day. If Headquarters has a meeting coming up , all the information needed about the meeting will be posted in the Calendar of Events also. In the past we have depended on our chapters Liaisons to keep us informed when any changes was made for the chapter. We are now combining the Liaisons with the directors. The New directors, one from every chapter of Modern Day Veterans, will be placed on the Board of directors of Modern Day Veterans National Headquarters. Included in this paper work is a directors App that needs to be filled out and sent to Headquarters. Please make sure that this is done as soon as possible. JULY 2007 MDV National Hq. NEWSLETTER COMMANDER: TERESA KAUP MDV MEETING
SOS ANNUAL REPORTS UN-MOURNED SOLDIER PROJECT
DON'T FORGET TO SHAKE A VETERANS HAND & THANK THEM FOR THEIR SERVICE
MINUTES OF THE MDV NATIONAL MEETING 2007/06/12 Executive Director Buhler gave a report on the MDV Support Center. The MDV Support Center is run by veterans for veterans and their families. MDV HQ did not get the grant that it applied for last year; therefore MDV HQ is not able to finish paying for the building. The building will be sold to the Support Center. Improvements are still being made. The MDV Support Center has donated household goods (dishes, blankets, etc…) and clothing to those in need. The Poplar Bluff VA hospital and local churches continue to refer veterans in need to MODERN DAY VETERANS National Headquarters. Executive Director Buhler then went on to state that MDV HQ. has become subject to lawsuits in conjunction with MODERN DAY VETERANS subordinate chapters not obtaining Dram Shop Insurance and becoming involved in lawsuits due to accidents. Since MDV HQ. does not hold a liquor license MDV HQ can not obtain Dram Shop Insurance and has no need for it. All MODERN DAY VETERANS sub-chapters are responsible for obtaining there own Dram Shop Insurance. Secretary Starla Mairs gave a report on the annual Secretary of State filings. MODERN DAY VETERANS has 156 active chapters at this time. Since it was made mandatory at last years meeting to pay for the annual Secretary of State filing along with MDV chapter dues, only one chapter was lost due to failure to file. That chapter was it’s own agent and HQ did not get the notice. Starla also reminded all chapters that pays their dues after August to contact HQ. about their filing. It is a State law to file an annual return, failure to file will get a corporation closed or not in good standing with all State and Federal agencies, including MDV HQ., Liquor Control and the IRS. If your chapter started this year then you are not required to file until next year. 2. Meeting Aims & Purposes Report Secretary Starla Mairs gave a report about the importance of the Aims & Purposes reports and their use to maintain the exempt status for all MODERN DAY VETERANS chapters. It was also noted the importance of being much more specific about the activities that each chapter does. Instead of saying: “We held a benefit...” , the report should state, for who the benefit was held, what was done to raise money and how much was raised. Each report should specifically state if the person benefited was a Veteran or not. Although it is good to be active in your communities, Veterans are our number one priority. Make sure to return those reports to MDV HQ. 3. Membership Cards Report Secretary Starla Mairs gave the report on MDV membership cards. Only Veterans or their spouses & family members (with proof of relationship) are eligible for full member status. Only those applications with some form of Veteran affiliation are accepted. We do have Auxiliary cards, that are good only for your chapter, upon request. 4. Operation “ADOPT A UNIT” Secretary Starla Mairs gave a report on “ADOPT A UNIT”. Operation Adopt a Unit started by MDV HQ shortly after 9/11. We simply encourage every MDV chapter to send mail, care packages, etc… to a soldier or unit from their area. This way we should be able to cover most soldiers from Missouri. Our chapters are very creative in ways to raise funds and in the things they send. If your chapter does not know of a soldier or unit that they can adopt contact Starla at MDV HQ., and she will send you some addresses. Commander Kaup explained how MDV Headquarters policies inadvertently got mixed up with MODERN DAY Veterans chapter policies and were sent out with last months newsletter. The updated policies will be resent soon. 2. Red Fridays Commander Kaup gave a report about Red Fridays and she hopes that all MDV chapters will participate. Many Americans, like you, me and all our friends, simply want to recognize that the vast majority of America supports our troops. The idea of showing solidarity and support for our troops with dignity and respect by wearing RED each Friday should send a deafening message that we support our troops. Their blood runs red… so wear red! This movement was not started by MDV but is one we would like the chapters to participate in. 3. Un-mourned Soldier Project Commander Kaup and Secretary Starla Mairs gave a presentation with a film clip of a Military Honors Funeral. At that funeral for a soldier that was killed in Iraq, there was only the Funeral Director and a Representative from the Veterans cemetery. No family, no friends, no mourners to pay this soldier last respects. MDV Headquarters has decided that it will contact the Commanders of the Military Honors program and ask them to contact us if they find they have a service with no family or friends, so that we may send out a delegation to pay their respects to the fallen soldier. We as a whole can do something extremely supportive for our Veterans who deserve so much more than an un-mourned funeral. MODERN DAY Veterans National Headquarters will reimburse mileage for one car and up to four persons a meal for any chapter that participates. Several chapters voiced their willingness to send additional people and sponsor their own club. And there was born the UN-MOURNED SOLDIER PROJECT. 4. 990’s All chapters must file a 990 report regardless of the amount of sales. Commander Kaup presented the Community Service Award to Barbara Chastain of MDV Aux. 471. Betty Dean of MDV Aux. 471 gave a report about the activities MDV Aux. 471 held to earn the award. This chapter held a benefit dinner to raise $2144.00 for the Wright County Children’s Home, they also took donations for toys & clothing. They collected enough to also donate to the Cox Hospital’s Children’s Ward. They raised $382.00 for the widow of a Veteran to help her with expenses. This chapter learned of an 80 year old Veteran that had been beaten and in the hospital. He was due to be released with nowhere to go. They had an emergency meeting and raised $500 to help him rent an apartment, the members also donated a TV, dishes, bedding, and groceries along with a part-time housekeeper. This Veteran was not a member of their club, but of their community. He is now applying for membership at MDV Aux. 471. Executive Director Dianna Buhler presented the Most Active Members Award to MDV 266 for 64 members. MDV 266 was not present to accept the award, it will be mailed to them. Door prizes were awarded: MDV 751 won the first drawing and Cyndi Mix choose the grill for her chapter. MDV 1146 won the second drawing, winning the patriotic clock. Cindy Bacon represented her chapter. Commander Kaup called on Chaplain Rick McCormick, Meeting adjourned at 7:00PM Minutes prepared by Secretary Starla Mairs

CHRISTMAS GREETINGS ANOTHER VERSION OF “TWAS THE NIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMAS” AUTHOR UNKNOWN TWAS THE NIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMAS, HE LIVED ALL ALONE, IN A ONE BEDROOM HOUSE MADE OF PLASTER AND STONE. I HAD COME DOWN THE CHIMNEY WITH PRESENTS TO GIVE, AND TO SEE JUST WHO IN THIS HOME DID LIVE. I LOOKED ALL ABOUT, A STRANGE SIGHT I DID SEE, NO TINSEL, NO PRESENTS, NOT EVEN A TREE. NO STOCKING BY MANTLE, JUST BOOTS FILLED WITH SAND, ON THE WALL HUNG PICTURES OF FAR DISTANT LANDS. WITH MEDALS AND BADGES, AWARDS OF ALL KINDS, A SOBER THOUGHT CAME THROUGH MY MIND. FOR THIS HOUSE WAS DIFFERENT, IT WAS DARK AND DREARY, I FOUND THE HOME OF A SOLDIER, ONCE I COULD SEE CLEARLY. THE SOLDIER LAY SLEEPING, SILENT, ALONE, CURLED UP ON THE FLOOR IN THIS ONE BEDROOM HOME. THE FACE WAS SO GENTLE, THE ROOM IN SUCH DISORDER, NOT HOW I PICTURED A UNITED STATES SOLDIER. WAS THIS THE HERO OF WHOM I’D JUST READ? CURLED UP ON A PONCHO, THE FLOOR FOR A BED? I REALIZED THE FAMILIES THAT I SAW THIS NIGHT OWED THEIR LIVES TO SOLDIERS HE LIVED ALL ALONE, IN A ONE BEDROOM HOUSE MADE OF PLASTER AND STONE. WAS THIS THE HERO OF WHOM I’D JUST READ? CURLED UP ON A PONCHO, THE FLOOR FOR A BED? I REALIZED THE FAMILIES THAT I SAW THIS NIGHT OWED THEIR LIVES TO SOLDIERS WHO WERE WILLING TO FIGHT. SOON AROUND THE WORLD, THE CHILDREN WOULD PLAY, AND GROWNUPS WOULD CELEBRATE A BRIGHT CHRISTMAS DAY. THEY ALL ENJOYED FREEDOM EACH MONTH OF THE YEAR, BECAUSE OF THE SOLDIERS, LIKE THE ONE LYING HERE. I COULDN’T HELP WONDER HOW MANY LAY ALONE, ON A COLD CHRISTMAS EVE IN A LAND FAR FROM HOME. THE VERY THOUGHT BROUGHT A TEAR TO MY EYE, I DROPPED TO MY KNEES AND STARTED TO CRY. THE SOLDIER AWAKENED AND I HEARD A ROUGH VOICE, “SANTA DON’T CRY THIS LIFE IS MY CHOICE; I FIGHT FOR FREEDOM, I DON’T ASK FOR MORE, MY LIFE IS MY GOD, MY COUNTRY, MY CORPS.” THE SOLDIER ROLLED OVER AND DRIFTED TO SLEEP, I COULDN’T CONTROL IT, I CONTINUED TO WEEP. I KEPT WATCH FOR HOURS, SO SILENT AND STILL AND WE BOTH SHIVERED FROM THE COLD NIGHT’S CHILL. I DIDN’T WANT TO LEAVE ON THAT COLD, DARK, NIGHT, THIS GUARDIAN OF HONOR SO WILLING TO FIGHT. THEN THE SOLDIER ROLLED OVER, WITH A VOICE SOFT AND PURE, WHISPERED, ”CARRY ON SANTA, IT’S CHRISTMAS DAY, ALL IS SECURE.” ONE LOOK AT MY WATCH, *************************FROM STAR’S DESK******************************************************** I FOUND THE ABOVE POEM ON-LINE, THERE ARE ACTUALLY SEVERAL DIFFERENT VERSIONS. AS YOU KNOW, NEW YEARS EVE FALLS ON A SUNDAY THIS YEAR, SINCE THE NEW YEAR IS RUNG IN AT MIDNIGHT, DO YOU STILL HAVE TO CLOSE AT MIDNIGHT? I CALLED LIQUOR CONTROL AND ASKED WHAT EXACTLY WAS THE LAW ABOUT IT. “THERE IS AN EXCEPTION ON 7 DAYS OF THE YEAR, (STATUTE CHAPTER 311, SECTION 311.298). NEW YEARS EVE IS ONE OF THOSE EXCEPTIONS. IF YOU HAVE A LIQUOR BY THE DRINK LICENSE THAN YOU DO NOT HAVE TO CLOSE UNTIL 1:30 AM.“ THANK YOU TO STEVE SHIMMENS AT THE MISSOURI DIVISION OF LIQUOR CONTROL IN JEFFERSON CITY, MO. FOR THE ANSWER TO THAT QUESTION.
HAPPY HOLIDAYS TO ALL!!!
